Due to postponement last week due to pitch conditions Nailsea finally got their League Cup fixture against Middlezoy Rovers under way. Both sides are struggling in the league so a cup tie would be a welcome distraction.
If any spectators arrived late they would have missed the first goal of the game when the visitors took the lead in the first minute with a move down their left wing which saw the ball rolled into the Nailsea goal despite valiant efforts by two Nailsea defenders to stop its progress.
After this early shock United came into the game with Matt Thomas trying his luck from distance on ten minutes but the ball just evaded the Middlezoy goal. The home side were giving Middlezoy too much room in the midfield and required Jack Smith to make a good save at the near post to keep the deficit to one goal on the half an hour mark.
The remainder of the first half brought no further real goal chances as both defences held firm.
Half Time. Nailsea United 0 Middlezoy Rovers 1
At the start of the second half Nailsea were forced to make a substitution with Ben Pratt being replaced by Ed Starzac. United were the livelier team in the opening minutes with Matt Day testing the keeper with a strong shot from an acute angle on 48 minutes. Middlezoy responded by creating a shooting chance only for the shot to be straight at Jack Smith in the United goal. This respite was short lived as two minutes later Smith could only parry a shot from the Middlezoy left before it crept over the line to double their lead.
On 58 minutes Nailsea were given a life line when they were awarded a penalty. Matt Day took the responsibility firing his shot high into the net to bring the score to 2-1 to Middlezoy. Nailsea then began to exert pressure on the visitors defence as they searched for the equaliser. A corner by Will Symonds was met firmly by the head of Tom Richens only for his effort to be headed off of the line. Ben Barrett then created a chance but his shot was blocked.
Despite increasing the pressure on Middlezoy Nailsea were unable to add to their score with the visitors making a quick break down their left to unhinge the home defence to score goal number three to reinstate their two goal advantage. Nailsea could have gone further behind only for Smith to claw away a shot bound for the top corner.
On 70 minutes Nailsea made their second change with Joe Sharps being replaced by Henry Symonds to be followed shortly by Luis Parnham giving way to Will Hodges as the United management sought to save the game. With ten minutes remaining a Matt Thomas free kick which was too high was the only Nailsea threat.
The game was then held up due to a facial injury to Henry Symonds which resulted in Nailsea playing the last few minutes with ten men.
Final Score. Nailsea United 1 Middlezoy Rovers 3
To be honest Nailsea never really recovered from the first minute goal with Middlezoy able to command the midfield throughout the game. It was only a ten minute spell after they scored their penalty that Nailsea put any real pressure on the visitors whose name deservedly goes into the hat for the next round draw.
