Our Club is delighted to announce that its final fundraising event has now been finalised and I hope you will agree, this one will produce a memorable end to the season!
As many of you will know, we usually hold our popular ‘Showboat’ event on the Sunday of the last May Bank Holiday weekend. ‘The Showboat’ has always been a popular and well supported event, involving local players, friends and families and although we wanted to retain these key factors, we have decided to hold a different type of event for very special reasons.
Over the past couple of seasons our Club has experienced some devastating personal losses. The extremely sad deaths of James Colman, John Hobbs and Derek Hucker, all hit the Club incredibly hard and it is perhaps true to say, we will never really come to terms with what has happened. There have been (and will be) many ways and events by which people will always remember James, John and Derek, but as a Club, we have been looking to come up with a single event where we can collectively celebrate the lives and memories of all of them and one where something positive can evolve out of so much widespread sadness. We have decided that a day dedicated to their memory where we can raise funds both for our Club and selected relevant charities would be most fitting.
The Nailsea United FC ‘Heroes Day’, will be held on Sunday, 28/5/2017. During the day, the event will incorporate a series of special commemorative matches, with four teams competing for a trophy; the teams will be made up of the three Somerset County Premier Division winning squads who each won that honour during the past 12 years and the fourth, teammates of James at Youth and Senior level. The winners of a ‘round robin’ tournament will be presented with the Dave Williams Memorial Trophy. Dave was my predecessor as Club Chairman who sadly died of cancer in 2008 and this will also give us all the opportunity to remember him, another fantastic servant to our Club.
During the matches, where we will be holding a raffle and a collection for the charities, the Club will also be running its own licensed bar and serving delicious hot BBQ food. To round the day off in the evening there will be a DJ and again, our own licensed bar, all held in a large marquee tent alongside the Club’s main pitch. Entry will be free. Watch this space for other entertainment such as a live band, made up of members from the Club!
The respective charities which will benefit from our event will be CRY (Cardiac Risk in the Young) – in memory of James, Cancer Research – in memory of John and Dave and the Motor Neurone Disease Association – in memory of Derek.
We are contacting as many players as possible who played for the Club in those memorable Championship winning teams and also those who played alongside James. However, if these teams involved you and you can make the day, we would of course love to hear from you (contact numbers at the foot of this article).
