Mendip Broadwalk 4 Nailsea United 3

For the second week running Nailsea were in cup action this time in the League Cup playing away to Mendip Broadwalk.

The first shot in anger fell to the home side on seven minutes but Rob Brown collected easily. With only their second attack Mendip opened the scoring with a shot inside of the far post which the diving Brown could not reach.

United then replied on 13 minutes with a cross from the left by Mike Carroll which was met by a diving header from Sam Olsen to bring the scores level. With the ball not running on the heavily grassed surface both sides found it difficult to play open football. The home side had the better of the middle stages of the half with Rob Brown doing well on 25 minutes to grab the ball in a goal mouth melee.

A minute later a good move by Nailsea saw Carroll find Matt Day on the right, his pass across the goal was just inches from the on rushing Matt Thomas. Mendip regained the lead on 35 minutes when their player found plenty of space in front of the goal to make no mistake in finding the back of the United net.

Two minutes later United had the chance to equalise when a well worked move saw Matt Day in a good position but shot wide. As half time beckoned United were indebted to Rob Brown who made a double save to ensure that his side went into the break with only a one goal deficit.

Half Time.  Mendip Broadwalk 2  Nailsea United 1

Only two minutes of the second half had elapsed when a well struck shot from outside the area rocketed into the Nailsea net to put clear daylight between the two sides. Mendip now had the wind in their sails as they looked to add to their goal tally. This they duly did on 57 minutes when Ed Starzak made a poor clearance to give a Mendip player a chance to shoot which he duly did to make the scoreline 4-1 in favour of the home side.

Nailsea immediately made three changes with Sam Olsen, Matt Thomas and Ed Starzak being replaced by Matt Hodges, Cameron Henderson and Brad Cogan in an effort to get something from the game.

These changes had the desired effect with United scoring on 73 minutes from a Will Hodges cross from the right which was headed In by Brad Cogan.

A minute later a shot from distance by Mike Carroll rebounded from the cross bar with the keeper beaten to show that the visitors were still in the game. With eight minutes remaining a Nailsea free kick was met by the head of James Taylor who found Mike Rowcliffe whose half volley gave the keeper no chance to set up a tense last few minutes for the home side.

However, try as they may Nailsea could not force the equaliser going down to their second cup defeat in consecutive weeks.

Final score. Mendip Broadwalk 4 Nailsea United 3

Nailsea did well to fight back from a three goal deficit but too many individual mistakes cost them the match. The young players in the side will learn that if you give chances to teams in this standard of football they are usually punished. This is a learning curve that will stand them in good stead as they gain experience.

Next week it is back to league action with a visit to Middlezoy Rovers with a 3.00pm start.
