Nailsea travelled to Middlezoy Rovers on Saturday on a wild and windy day. Surprisingly the pitch was firm for this clash of two mid table teams.
The first minutes saw both sides battle to overcome the conditions with the home side having the first goal scoring chance on 15 minutes with a headed effort from a free kick which was sent over the bar. Two minutes later Matt Thomas fed Stuart Lee but the home keeper clawed away his shot.
United nearly took the lead on 18 minutes when a misplaced back pass by a home defender was sent wide of his keeper who just managed to scramble back to his goal to stop the ball from crossing the line. Both sides were trying to play good football in the blustery conditions with Ben Barrett skipping down the right flank to create a chance but the keeper easily gathered his shot.
On 40 minutes a good Nailsea move again down the right saw Ben Barrett set up Sam Olsen in the centre of the goal but his shot was parried by the keeper but only to Barrett who perhaps could have done better with his shot which was wide. Nailsea were now having the better chances with Matt Thomas crossing to find Sam Olsen but his header was placed wide.
The last two minutes of the first half saw two chances the first to Middlezoy from a free kick which was well controlled on the edge of the area but the resultant shot was wide of the post, then on the stroke of half time another accurate cross from Matt Thomas found Stuart Lee in space but on this occasion Lee could not generate enough power in to his header with the relieved keeper saving.
Half Time. Middlezoy Rovers 0 Nailsea United 0
A fairly even half of football with Nailsea finishing strongly with chances to break the deadlock which were not converted which they may find costly on 90 minutes.
The second half started with Nailsea continuing to press the home defence with Stuart Lee forcing a corner in the first minute which was defended safely. As the second half wore on the home side began to gain a foothold which saw Nailsea make their first change on 65 minutes with Will Symonds replacing Ben Barrett. On 70 minutes the home pressure finally brought a reward when following a corner from the right a goal mouth scramble saw the ball poked into the United net from close range to give Middlezoy the advantage.
With a quarter of an hour remaining Nailsea made a double change with Will Hodges and Alfie Randall replacing Ben Pinkney and Luis Parnham. With five minutes remaining substitute Will Hodges fired wide with a shot from distance. Then with three minutes of normal time remaining Middlezoy were awarded a free kick on the right just outside of the penalty area which found the top left hand corner of the Nailsea goal to make the game safe for the home side.
Nailsea could have scored a consolation goal with one minute remaining when a free kick found the ball with Sam Olsen in front of goal but the shot had no power to trouble the keeper.
Final Score. Middlezoy Rovers 2 Nailsea United 0
This was a story of chances taken and chances missed as United could have on a different day gone into the half time break with a comfortable lead. In the end they travelled back from Middlezoy pointless.
Next week United are at home to basement club Odd Down Reserves. Kick Off 2.30. Although on paper this looks an easier game then today’s, experience had shown that these reserve sides of Toolstation clubs can spring surprises.
