Tuesday night saw United play hosts to Clutton who they had beaten by four goals to nil a few weeks ago. With the number of sides being relegated at the end of the season uncertain third from bottom Clutton were looking for three points.
The early exchanges were even with the first half chance falling to Nailsea on ten minutes when a Kin corner from the right was only cleared to Stuart Lee but his shot was wide of the mark. Ten minutes later following another corner this time from the left taken by Kin the Clutton defence could only clear the ball to Harry Hope on the edge of the penalty area, his immediate low shot found the back of the net just inside the post to put his side one up.
Clutton were very much in the game with a dangerous cross on 25 minutes which was beaten away by Owen Adamson in the United goal. Three minutes later Luke Penberthy had a strong run at the Clutton defence but his shot was gathered by the keeper. With five minutes to go before half time Nailsea were awarded a free kick just outside the area on the left. Harry Hope elected to take to try his luck sending in a rocket powered shot that flew into the Clutton net before the keeper could move to double the Nailsea lead.
There was still time for Harry Hope to shoot again but this time his effort was wide.
Half Time. Nailsea United 2 Clutton 0
Although Nailsea had the advantage in goals the first half was even with the Hope goal from a free kick the outstanding action of the first 45 minutes.
With just five minutes of the second half gone a neat passing movement by Nailsea down the left saw Ben Pinkney with the ball before his shot looped over the Clutton keeper before dropping into the net for United’s third goal.
Two minutes later Clutton responded by scoring from a corner from the right which was struck into the Nailsea net from close range. Clutton now had the better of exchanges coming close with a shot following a corner which was just too high.
On 60 minutes Nailsea skipper James Springett was replaced by Joe Sharps. The home side then conjured a half chance when Kin worked himself into a shooting position but his shot was straight at the keeper. United then made their second change with a quarter of an hour to go with Luke Penberthy being replaced by Adam Marsden in attack.
A minute later Clutton had a great chance to reduce the deficit when a quick break saw them cut through the United defence but the visiting player could not take the opportunity. With Clutton now the stronger side a goal then could have turned the match in their favour. The last United change came on 78 minutes with Rob Brown replacing Kin as Nailsea looked to secure their lead.
Clutton were still in the hunt for goal with Nailsea grateful for a last ditch tackle by Luis Parnham taking the ball from the Clutton striker as he was about to shot from close range. With five minutes remaining a typical piece of ball control by Harry Hope on the left gave him the chance to send in a cross which was met at the far post by Ben Pinkney but his header went the wrong side of the post.
The final move of the game saw Hope and Pinkney combine to set up a chance for Adam Marsden but his effort was sent wide.
Final Score. Nailsea United 3 Clutton 1
Another three points for Nailsea although Clutton who showed how desperate they are to climb the table pushing them all of the way.
